Willis Mountain is a kyanite mine. It is owned by Kyanite Mining Corporation and is located in Buckingham County, Virginia 123. The mountain is composed of kyanite-bearing quartz that weathers more slowly than the surrounding material 4. The Kyanite Mining Corporation has been mining Willis Mountain for long enough to reduce significantly the profile of the mountain 4. The two Virginia mines of Kyanite Mining Corporation, the Willis Mountain location and the adjacent East Ridge, yield about 132,000 short tons per year, a whopping 86 percent of the estimated worldwide output 3. We usually go out collecting every year in September except this year it was cancelled doue to weather. Makes beautiful one of kind jewelry.
